Shhh! The Benefits of Silence.

One often overlooked action we can take for our health is enjoying some silence. It's free, and it comes with numerous benefits.

Several studies on the effects of noise have been done in recent years. We are constantly surrounded by the humm of electronics, a noisy work environment, the TV and traffic. The simple ringing of a cellphone has been found to cause a spike in blood pressure.

Loud noises have also been associated with anxiety & stress.

Stress causes a spike in adrenaline and blood cortisol levels. It is one of the biggest killers in the world and increased cortisol levels leads to weight gain or the inability to lose weight.

If you're looking to lose some weight, you need to reduce stress! Silence not only reduces stress, but it can also boost your immune system, enabling your body to fight off bacteria. It can also help keep plaque from forming in the arteries.

Silence allows your brain to re-charge, boosting your brain chemistry making you happier and allowing you to focus better. Silence can lead to higher cognitive abilities, including improving short term memory. I'm not telling you to lock yourself in your room in silence all day.

30 minutes is ideal, but even small 5-minute breaks can have big benefits.

Here are few things you can do:

  • take a break from your electronics
  • take some quiet time when you wake up to stretch or enjoy the sunrise
  • sit outside and enjoy the sunset
  • relax in your favourite room
  • take a quiet bath

Taking some time to enjoy the silence will allow you to reflect on your day.

We live in a world of chronic noise and stress.

Don't let life pass you by; take a little time to appreciate life's moments and your health can benefit too.
